Scarborough's 49th Congress
Scheduled for 23rd - 25th October 2026
Due to the success of 2025 despite our top sections suffering due to the Coventry International we're keeping the format the same - 6 sections with over £7000 in prize money and no increase in entry fees and there will still be the £5 discount for juniors and seniors.
Our event is part of the new ECF International Series.
ChessPick are now sponsoring our event and will be providing coaching credits to the best performing 3 players in each section.
We also welcome Chess Essentials who are also sponsoring the event and will be providing the bookstall.
The Club Championship is now a feature of our congress after the success of 2025 - so can you help make your club champions of 2026? Ilkley's 'The Chess Centre' are the current champions.
Last year we achieved a record entry level of 445 - this year our aim is to break the 500 level but note that the 2 rooms we have booked at the Spa Complex will max out just over 500 so please book early.
A note on ratings and section selection .. we have traditionally allowed the published July ratings to be used to determine which section you can enter even though the congress will use current October ratings during the event. The reasoning is that this gives people time to prepare for the congress with regards accommodation and encourages enter entries ... the downside is that we can then get disgruntled players who could end up playing people who are stronger than the section entered. If players have managed to improve their game between July and October then that is to be encouraged so this condition will remain in force and we would only consider moving players with a provisional rating.
Scarborough 48th Congress - Report
Our aim this year was to reach 400 entries so we increased the prize money and added the Challengers section to try and help us achieve this goal. However, we were hampered by the ECF's Coventry International which did affect our top sections but we introduced a new Club Tournament to our congress to determine which club was the best performing to try and compensate and we ended up with an amazing 445 entries in total making this the biggest Scarborough Congress. We consequently had to hire the Sun Court to accommodate!
Statistics .....
From the 445 entries, we had over 150 newcomers to Scarborough, 66 juniors, 106 seniors and 25 females ranging from 7 to 92 years of age with an overall average age of 46.
We had over 28 Clubs competing to be the best performing involving over 220 players (half our total).
The best performing club was The Chess Centre closely followed by Leeds.
ChessPick.com came and sponsored our Juniors who are providing online coaching through their site and if you sign up via our links you'll then be helping us!
We welcomed back Lara Barnes as chief arbiter and Matthew Carr joined our team providing live boards for the top sections. James Fisher from Chess & Bridge returned to provide our equipment and a bookstall.
Many thanks go to everyone who entered and very much hoping it was enjoyed by all as we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Congratulations to all our winners who are listed below.
Scarborough's 49th Congress is scheduled for 23rd-25th October 2026 and will be very similar to this years regarding format.
